It is typical to use a riser to allow for such movement of the drill string. Such risers are typically large diameter pipe structures that extend from a drilling rig up to several thousand feet to a drill ship. Drill string elements, such as casing or drill pipe, extend through the riser and are typically retrieved and either stored on a drill floor or else retrieved to the rig floor where they are stored in a rack for later use. Depending on the particular offshore drilling operation, the depth of the sea floor where the rig is located may vary from, for example, around 800 feet to over 5000 feet. Thus, it is often necessary to make some modifications to the riser in order to achieve a suitable height for facilitating a particular depth of the rig. For example, the riser may be modified with several annular steel segments that are threaded together to form a larger riser. Unfortunately, in the modification process, it is often necessary to cut the steel segments in order to join them together. During such a cut, the upper end of a metal segment has a tendency to deform out of the cutting plane. This deformation results in a bottom end of the steel segment that is curved. Typically, such a bottom end is rounded to a radius of, for example, 25 inches. For many drilling operations, such a bottom end of the segment is acceptable. However, for some operations, such as for the collection of debris, such a bottom end is a problem. FIG. 1 illustrates a prior art riser assembly 200 having a steel segment 10. The steel segment 10 has a top end 12 and a bottom end 14. At the top end 12, the steel segment 10 has an integral and substantially flat portion 16. At the bottom end 14, the steel segment 10 has a rounded portion 18. Typically, the steel segment 10 has a thin wall with a wall thickness of approximately ¾ inch.
